Seperate Entrances

The photograph displays the front of a store with two entrances, one for "white" and one for "colored". By the look of the building and the cars this photograph was taken around the fifties when racism was a huge problem in our country. White and Black people had to go into separate entrances to go into the same exact building which makes no sense because once they were in the store it didn't matter at all. They were still around each other and received the same thing at the store, regardless of what entrance they used. The majority of white people believed they were better than black people and therefore could not even use the same door way. In reality it just makes the white people of this era look petty and like snobs. If anyone did this today they would be looked down on and people would be horrified by their actions. This picture is very upsetting because it reminds us of a time where our country was not at its finest moment and really not a united country. How can we be the United States of America if we are completely divided by races? America is called the Great Melting Pot but racsim contradicts this idea completely if Americans think they are too good to be mixed in with other races. This depiction is also very hopeful because we can look at how far our country has come regarding racism and how eventually we can make racism a thing of the past.
