In this picture, people are picking crops from a field where the soil is hard and dry. This picture was most likely taken during the Great Depression, in the Dust Bowl. Times were already hard enough, but then it was too dry for plants to grow well. It was hard for farmers in there families living in areas like the one in this picture because they often had nothing to depend on for income besides their crops. This, along with the stock market crashing, made life very hard for people living during the 1930's.
