In China, police officers, both undercover and in uniform, flooded the central shopping area of Beijing, Wangfujing after overhearing calls by organizers for a pro-democracy protest. There were no protests because of the methods used by the police force. Three photographers were beaten repeatedly by the police force and detained, as well as foreign journalists who were manhandled and escorted away from the site. Also, street sweepers went through the center to block any pedestrian traffic and spraying water everywhere. In Hong Kong, however, 25 citizens who formed a group on Facebook organized in the city center holding signs that read “Freedom and Democracy. End One Party Rule. Push for Political Reform." More than 100 protesters have been caught by authorities and are having files being charged against them. Online campaigners have urged people in 13 Chinese cities to gather and protest against the government. I think that these police are using successful methods in catching these campaigners, but I think it also shows how corrupt the country is, that the citizens don’t even have the freedom of speech. Many citizens in many countries have protested against the government, both violently and peacefully. I hope that China will not use violent methods like Egypt and other countries in the Middle East in order to end these protests.
