Longer School Year?

When I first heard that Obama wanted the school year/day extended, I wasn't happy. Who would want to spend their summer doing homework and learning? And isn't 7:45 to 2:16 long enough? However, if you really think about it, he's got to have a reason to make such a big a decision. Although I don't like it, he might be right. The United States is supposed to be a leader to the rest of the world. And we are in many aspects...except for our education system. Sadly, we actually rank at about 24th in the world. While countries like China and India continue to advance, US students are dropping out left and right, ignoring assignments, and sleeping through their classes. This is scary. These countries could take over the world with the amount of power they are gaining.
As a student, I can say that actually doing ativities helps me learn better. Labs in science class help me to remember information, and understand certain concepts more easily. I think that when a class is fun, but under control, most students (myself included), will leave knowing more, liking school, and in a good mood.
However, I'd really like it if Obama makes the change in 2015....
