So, Japan got hit by a tsunami. Devastating. But, you can rebuild after any natural disaster, no matter if it's a hurricane, earthquake, or tsunami. What Japan is facing now is even worse. Nuclear meltdown. Three nuclear power plants began to emit radiation in Japan after the earthquake/tsunami combo. They're not emitting a high level of radiation, but experts expect the radiation concentration to go up as time goes on. The radiation level right now is twice the "safe" level of Japan. To compare, lets imagine that the safe level of donuts is 6. That's not to say you feel great after six donuts, but you can still function and it won't have any long-lasting reprecussions. So the "safe" level isn't perfect, but you can endure it and not have long-lasting effects. Anyway, twice the safe level of donuts would be twelve. A full dozen. You eat twelve donuts in a row, I guarantee you won't be functioning well. You won't feel like doing anything, you might throw up, and you won't eat for a while. As for long-lasting effects, you'll gain a couple pounds (and we all know how hard it is to get rid of those), probably never eat donuts again (even in moderation), and everyone that knows about it will think you're a pig for forever. And that's just twice the limit on donuts. If you move onto the hard stuff like radiation, I'm willing to bet my life savings that it's at least ten times worse than donuts. The natural things you can come back from. But nuclear stuff? You really never recover from that stuff. Ask the people near Chernobyl or Hiroshima. They still haven't recovered. This will be bad.
I used information and stories from the New York Times. The first three on the right here. ------------------------------------------------------->
