The earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan was devastating that there were literally bodies washing up on the shore. Thousands are dead, and nuclear plants that have exploded are releasing so many bad chemicals and radiation into the air that cities are being evacuated again. Almost seventy countries have stepped up to help Japan, either by sending packages with things like blankets and food or rescue teams to find missing people, or teams to help contain the explosions from the nuclear plants. Even New Zealand, who had their own terrible earthquake not too long ago, was able to lend a hand. I think everyone should try to pitch in and help Japan, because someday when we have our own disaster we would want other countries to come and help us. Schools can set up canned food drives or money jars to help Japan. There are almost 400,000,000 people in the United States today. Imagine if each person donated one dollar to help Japan. Now imagine two dollars, plus one item like canned food or a piece of clothing. That would be almost one billion dollars, plus more supplies. And that’s in only the United States; imagine countries like China and India where everyone pitched in to help Japan. It’s going to take time for Japan to get back on it’s feet, but there are other people who don’t have what they need to survive, while a lot of us go home and have more food than we can eat and more clothes that we can wear. It doesn’t take that think anyone has a good excuse not to help. Even a jar of pennies can help. And remember that one day it could be us needing help from other countries, and were going to have to count on the people who are far away from else to lend a hand.
